11 Easy Ways To Make Others Feel Important

  1. Empathize With Them — If you can take over their perspective, or see things from their point of view, you will really make them feel valued. The easiest way to do this is by understanding that they have a legitimate reason for feeling the way they do. Their feelings are their reality. Emphasize with them even if you cannot understand where those feelings are coming from.
  2. Listen — This should be pretty self-explanatory but most people do not truly listen. The more you listen the more you will notice what is said in-between the lines. Focus on why they use the words they use and you will finally truly listen. (See “Active Listening” on Google).
  3. Always Agree First — “Yes, and…” is the way to keep a conversation going. You’ll be surprised at how much more openly people talk if you agree with them first. Agreeing with them, in this sense, only means acknowledging that they view it this way. It does not mean you have to take on their point of view. You can always retrace your steps later but try to agree first as it opens up the conversation and does not close them off out of spite.
  4. Make Eye Contact — 7 seconds of eye contact, then a short glance somewhere else, and then focusing back on their eyes. Just don’t get lost in their eyes to the point you forget to listen.
