Confirmation Bias.

We all have a tendency to try to confirm our beliefs and look for information that helps us do that while avoiding information that is opposed to the belief we hold. Both consciously and subconsciously we seek to confirm what we believe in, and our mind even filters out what we experience to confirm our beliefs.

This can be both a giant positive as well as a detrimental negative depending on the belief that is being confirmed. If you believe the world is negative, dark and horrible your mind will look for proof of that. You might look through an article or through channels on the TV and stay stuck on the negatives, may engage your friends in slightly more negative conversations and remember the bad things that happen to you more easily.

The same can also happen if you believe something positive and your mind will look for proof of that. If you believe everybody likes you, for example, then you might view something negative they say as them just being angry or frustrated rather than taking it personally. In such a way our mind transforms experiences to fit the belief we hold inside, which has a ton of different applications as you will see with the Self-Fulfilling Prophecy.
