6 Steps To Increase Your Willpower
Step #1: Raise Your Awareness.
To do this, set an alarm on your phone every hour of the day that says: “Why are you doing what you are doing right now?”
This enables you to actually notice when you are distracting yourself. Most of the time you will only notice in hindsight that you were distracted. At which point in time you most likely wasted so much time that you already feel so bad about it that you just want to run away from this bad feeling and distract yourself even more.
Become aware of it right away, as often as you can every day and you will have more opportunities to actively interact with the distractions, which at least gives you the opportunity to say “No”. Without it, you will not even get a fighting chance.
Step #2: Start at 0.
When you beat yourself up over every little minute you waste by being distracted you will create an environment for yourself in which you do not want to stay. You create an emotional deficit before you even start.
When you then gain the awareness to make a choice, you likely feel so bad that all you want to do is run deeper into your comfort zone, which means more distractions. Learn to accept that you will get distracted, that not everything will go according to plan and that your willpower is not what you want it to…
