7 Things You Can Do to Not Take Comments So Seriously

  1. Remember comments are just words — Words hold no meaning other than what we give them. As such it is only their intention and reception that holds any possibility of a meaning, which means half of that is on you. Question is: Why does the word “dumb” affect you more than the word “flubbernut”?
  2. Understand the other person does not know you — They know a side of you, much like you may now a character on TV you see. The thing is, in a season a character goes through a year of life, yet you only see about 8 hours of their life (24 x 20 minutes). Similarly, a random stranger will get to have a general idea as to who you are, but will not be able to know you in depth at all.
  3. Projection — Most people project at least some of their internal ongoings on others. Do not think it has everything to do with you, it rarely does.
  4. Emotion affects everything — A person will think differently about you when they have eaten, are hungry, are emotional, had a good day, bad day, and everything in-between. The worse their life is overall, the more the average person wants to bring others down to their level to feel relatively better.
  5. Upgrade your own life — If your only source of self-worth are the people in your life and the acknowledgement you get, their words will matter a lot more. When you have…
