8 Easy Ways To Start A Conversation With A Stranger

  1. Assume Kinship — Act like they are your best friends before you even go into the conversation. It’s rarely about what you say but rather about the comfort you make them feel.
  2. Create Joy — Focus your entire effort on having fun with that person. People remember feelings more than words. Start each conversation with a smile. Ideally, you should be having a ton of fun before you even approach them, for that attracts people more than anything else.
  3. Talk Less — Reviewing your conversations with friends, you will be surprised to find that the conversations people remember most fondly were those in which they talked for 80% or more of the time. Ask more open questions sooner in your conversations.
  4. Be Physically Comfortable — Do not be overbearing or push limits, but act like you would with a best friend. Nudge them with your elbow, pat them on the back, or do whatever else you feel comfortable doing. Just keep it very non-sexual.
  5. Speak From Your Heart — If you feel awkward or uncomfortable then say that. “Hey, I am very bad at starting a conversation but you seemed like a really interesting person so I would love to start a conversation.” Lines similar to that will often get you far more than trying to come up with a clever ice-breaker.
