Overcome Inadequacy: The Problem With Comparisons
Who are you comparing yourself to?
Do you feel inadequate? Unsuccessful? Unhappy? Or not good enough in general?
If so then you must have a standard of comparison that is all of those things.
But who is it that actually fulfills that standard?
Who is “good enough” in your eyes?
Most likely you developed an unconscious habit of comparing with other people.
You do not really have a single person you are comparing yourself to but are picking out the best qualities of the people you see and compare yourself to that sum of bests.
But, that is a pretty unfair comparison.
Assume a Marathon runner compared their segmented run to a sum of the best segments of all their friends.
Would that be a fair comparison?
Even if they compared a single run to their own best segments they would still be at a very unfair disadvantage.
Life will have its ups and downs, but comparing a sum of bests to your life overall is a comparison you can never win.
This is what you are doing when you compare yourself to other people; you put their best moments against your averages.
