Success & Failure — Why You Need One To Have The Other

Success does not define us.

As much as we think it does, it is always the failures along the way, the mistakes in the process, that define a life as successful or not.

Think about a person who has never failed in their entire life.

Their life was a breeze, they never had to work for it, succeeded in every little thing they did and never had a problem.

Failure was not an option, it was not even a reality for them.

Would they ever truly feel successful?

By what standard would they measure their success if they never knew the opposite?

We can only say it is bright outside because we know what darkness is like.

We only know what happiness feels like because we experienced sadness before.

And we only understand success when we have understood what it truly feels like to fail.

Until that moment success is the only thing that is, and therefore it becomes nothing.

To better illustrate this think about something you take for granted, like putting on your shoes in the morning.

To you, doing this is not a success, because you have not failed at it in a long, long time.
