Remember that in an interview the company is looking for a way to generate more income.
That means that, by paying you, they hope to generate more money through the hours you put in.
Essentially: they are looking for someone that gives the company more value than the money they will spend.
In most cases this creates a win-win situation, as you are the one wanting to make money, same as them.
If you can convince them that they are gaining something more than the money they spend by hiring you, they will hire you on the spot.

“How can I give you more value? What is this company looking for? What work do you want me to do outside of the contract written here?”
