The Best Way To Use The Pomodoro Technique

One of the best techniques for Productivity is the Pomodoro Technique… however the best version of this is not the original!

The original Pomodoro Technique follows 5 Steps (Source: Productivity 101: A Primer to The Pomodoro Technique):

  1. Decide on the task to be done.
  2. Set a 25-minute Pomodoro Timer.
  3. End work when the timer rings and put a checkmark on a piece of paper.
  4. If you have fewer than four checkmarks, take a short break (3–5 minutes), then go to step 2.
  5. After four Pomodoro's, take a longer break (15–30 minutes), reset your checkmark count to zero, then go to step 1.

However, this version comes with a few problems that often are not addressed:

  1. What to do in the longer breaks — Most people end up doing other things, such as getting food, going to the bank or even preparing for the next task in this longer break… which defeats the whole purpose of the break!
  2. The short breaks are often too short/long — They are too short to really relax and recharge, but too long to avoid wanting to take a real break. This mixture makes you want to relax, while not getting a real break, and then you have to get back to work.
