The Importance of Marriage: A Discussion on Why it Matters

Marriage is NOT Essential.

We believe in marriage because we believe in love, but those two are not synonymous anymore.

Love can exist without the legally binding contract, and the contract can exist without love.

It is but the idea of marriage that stays behind.

The idea that this is “just how you do things when you love someone”. We humans are creatures of habit after all.

Having such a habit that has become a tradition that has served for millennia is hard to break, especially since our legal system has carefully integrated marriage as well.

And while there are ways around it nowadays, more often than not they are more complicated than just getting married.

That being said, people are starting to get married less than ever before, likely because there are those ways around it and because the idea of marriage is not what it once was.

It used to symbolize the total commitment to the other person, a contract that was unequivocal and one that you could not break.

This kind of contract served as a way for people to bind themselves together, “through thick and thin”, and was something that allowed both sides to fully commit.
