The Various Puzzle Pieces That Create Low Self-Esteem

  • Negative Feedback — When the world tells us that whatever we are doing isn’t good enough we feel like crap. It is this negative feedback that inspires some and destroys others.
  • People-Pleasing — If you always help others but never yourself you will always draw the shorter end of the stick. In the end, this means that when you are on your own and cannot rely on those that you helped that you will not have enough that you’ve built that support you.
  • Negative Self-Talk — While some people can deal with the world telling them they aren’t good enough, if they, themselves, have hundreds of thoughts every day that tell them that, eventually they will succumb. Many of us fall into this category. Our self-talk is awful not because we do not love ourselves, but because as humans we have a tendency to remember the negatives much more likely than the positives.
  • Negative Life Events — Especially early on these life events can truly define you. They may just be single moments, but in the wrong place, at the wrong time, they can carry an incredible amount of meaning to you. Fighting these moments is hard, and often requires the help of someone else or a lot of inner self-work, but you can also mask it by flooding your mind with positive counter-examples.
