I was awoken out of a nap by the sound of the doorbell.

Opening my front door I saw no one standing there, but a loud “HEY!” caught my attention.

Parked on the street was the car of my best friend.

“Get in. You’re spending Christmas with us. No complaints. Let’s go!”

I smiled teary-eyed, quickly grabbed a few things and headed out.

It would have been the first Christmas I would have spent absolutely alone, after my girlfriend at the time told me she was “Too embarrassed” to have me spend Christmas with her and her family, thereby breaking the promise she had made me.

But my best friend was there for me when it counted, even without me having to ask.

Later I found out he just told his parents that this was happening and that he did not allow them to say ‘No’ either.

Taking a deep breath I walked into the party.

I had always been self-conscious and never good at parties, so going to a big party where I knew no one was completely outside my comfort zone.

I was embarrassed, self-conscious and incredibly shy at the time.

It wasn’t long after I walked in that I felt a hand on my shoulder and started being dragged across the room.
