Titles, Characteristics, Personality Traits, Physical Attributes, Emotional States…

Doctor, Teacher, Student, Brother, Sister, Son, Daughter, Coworker, Employee, Employer, Gardener, Landlord, Engineer….

Kind, nice, funny, chaotic, caring, angry, aggressive, creative, charming, handsome, pretty, blonde, dark-skinned, brown-eyed, happy, sad…

Many of us use a select few of these exclusively, trying to describe who we are based on a few words, because we were taught to do just that.

We all know, however, that none of those describe who we are.

I can tell you that I am a blonde man, with blue eyes, that makes a lot of dad jokes, is relatively funny, skinny, very pale, with a beard, and who is nice, accepting, and nerdy, and you would get a general sense of who I am.

But if you did not know me before you do not know me after I described myself.

You would still have no idea what my face looks like, the way I smile, how I handle stress or joy, who I am as a partner or a friend, and wouldn’t have even scratched the surface of me.

This is true for me and is just as true for you, but is also what makes it so difficult.
